The Forgotten Successes: Coalition achievements in indigenous affairs from Menzies to the present day
A Thought Leader Series event with Julian Leeser MP
In marking the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum on indigenous recognition, few commentators chose to include a salient political fact. The referendum to which 90.7 per cent voted “yes” was established by Robert Menzies’ Coalition government, and held under his successor Harold Holt.
Like many of the Coalition’s achievements in social policy, the progress it achieved for indigenous Australians is seldom acknowledged.
Julian Leeser will attempt to rectify this imbalance at the MRC’s next Thought Leader Series gathering. Mr Leeser, a former executive director of the MRC, has thought longer and harder about the challenge of indigenous recognition than most. His views on amending the Constitution are an invaluable contribution to a sometimes emotionally charged debate.
As Liberals we are not bound by history or convention, but we firmly believe that we cannot chart our future without respecting the past. Mr Leeser’s frank assessment on our achievements to date, and no doubt our failures, is an event that should be in every thoughtful person’s diary.
