Menzies Research Centre appointments strengthen focus on enterprise and growth

Tuesday 27 June, 2017

The Menzies Research Centre has appointed three new directors from the corporate sector to strengthen its strategic focus on enterprise and growth.

Kevin McCann AM, a former Chairman of Macquarie Bank and Origin Energy has been appointed Chairman.

The two other appointments to the MRC’s board are the Hon Warwick Smith AM, Chairman, ANZ Bank NSW & ACT and the Australian Capital Equity Advisory Board, and Mitch Hooke AM, a former chief executive of the Minerals Council.

The MRC has also announced the appointment of Spiro Premetis to head the MRC’s Enterprise Policy Unit, which is currently undertaking a major review of economic policy with MRC director Tony Shepherd.

Mr McCann said: “I am delighted to be working with Executive Director Nick Cater and the board to develop research-based policies that ensure the future prosperity and security of Australia.

“The MRC has grown in stature and profile in recent years and has a deserved reputation for rigorous, independent policy analysis.”

Mr McCann paid tribute to retiring chairman Tom Harley who has stepped down from the position he has held since 2004. Previous chairmen include Malcolm Turnbull and Andrew Robb.

Mr Cater said: “Kevin McCann, Warwick Smith and Mitch Hooke bring important experience to the board from the private sector, the engine for economic growth and productivity.

“While other think tanks focus on regulation and redistribution, the MRC is committed to policies that embrace freedom and empower businesses, families and individuals.”
